Ingredients

  • For Rice Balls:
  • 2½ cups parboiled rice (soaked for 6–7 hours)
  • 1½ whole coconut
  • Salt to taste
  • ⅓ cup water (for grinding each batch)
  • For Coconut Masala:
  • 3 cardamoms
  • 5 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 13 dry red chilies
  • 1 cup coconut
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • Water as needed
  • For Mutton:
  • 2–3 tbsp oil
  • 3 cardamoms
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 big onions
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 medium tomato
  • 5 green chilies
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp mutton masala
  • 550 g mutton
  • 2 cups water
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Traditional Mutton Rice Balls Breakfast is a hearty and flavorful South Indian delicacy made with soft homemade rice balls cooked in a rich coconut masala and tender mutton gravy. Fresh coconut, roasted spices, and slow-cooked mutton combine to create a deliciously aromatic dish that is perfect for family breakfasts, special occasions, and festive gatherings. Cooking Steps

    Grind half of the soaked rice with coconut, salt, and ⅓ cup water. Remove and repeat with the remaining rice mixture.

    Shape the prepared rice batter into small round balls.

    Roast cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and fennel seeds in a pan. Remove and roast dry red chilies in the same pan.

    In a grinder, add coconut, roasted spices, turmeric powder, roasted chillies, and water. Grind into a smooth masala mixture.

    Wash the grinder with water twice and add that masala water to the prepared masala.

    In a cooker, heat oil and add cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and onions. Sauté lightly.

    Add salt, tomato, green chillies, and little water. Close the lid and cook for 4 whistles.

    Open the cooker and add ginger garlic paste, garam masala, mutton masala, mutton, and 2 cups water. Cook for 5–6 whistles.

    In another pot, pour the masala water and little salt. Add one plate of rice balls and cook slightly. Then add the remaining rice balls.

    Add extra masala water as needed and cook gently until the rice balls are perfectly cooked.

    Add the cooked mutton along with the gravy and coconut masala according to your preferred consistency.
